Cripps Barn Wedding in the Cotswolds of Helen & David...

Groom carrying bride in a wheat field

Well it has to be said,  Cripps Barn has to be among my favourite "Cotswold Barn" venues, especially when it comes to weddings, especially with me being a Cotswold wedding photographer and all that.

With its location nestled down a long quiet driveway among some of the loveliest countryside the UK has on offer and literally a mile up the road from the prettiest of Cotswold villages including Bibury, Cripps Barn is an absolute gem, especially with its close links to Cheltenham and Gloucester.

Helen & David, from London decided after much searching, that this was going to be the place for them to tie the knot among their nearest and dearest. They had hired the stunning Cats Abbey for the weekend, where the bridal party could stay overnight ready for the early start to preparations the following morning which is situated only 20 minutes from Cheltenham here in Gloucestershire. There had been a lot of thought go into the layout and quirky design of the Abbey and the most impressive bit for me was to discover that the main bridal suite where Helen was getting ready had been painted white! This is a photographers dream!  Especially as the day of the wedding we had the weather against us and a big ol storm was brewing. However the natural and very flattering light that came through the windows lit the room beautifully from all sides.  I guess I sound like a real lighting geek here but hey, I was seriously impressed.

I moved about the room to capture a few bridal preparation and detail shots of Helen's gorgeous dress and all the goings on. Her dress was a very soft and ever so pale pink that was bought to life by the defused light that was pouring through the Skylight windows high above.  There was some rather interesting curios about the place that gave reference to someone that was maybe in the medical profession could have lived there at one time. As I love a little quirk, I made the most of it and shot Helens stunning bouquet against an old X-Ray that was in the downstairs dining room.

When I had what I needed it was time to dodge the humongous raindrops and make a break for the car. I arrived at Cripps Barn and met up with David where I was able to grab a few shots of him and the guys outside in between downpours before they went inside and David was able to nervously take up his position in the barn to await Helens arrival.  Well the Gods smiled upon us, as right on cue the rain stopped and the clouds parted just as Helen arrived in her blue Bentley.  The barn was packed as it was a relatively large wedding and Helen looked gorgeous with the biggest of smiles as she came down the aisle to meed David, who by the way was looking rather relaxed and sporting the biggest smile.

After the ceremony the rain was pouring down so we made use of the spacious barn for our group photographs.  I was even able to get up on an old table to get a large group shot of all their guests with my back pressed back against the wall to fit everyone in. Between the wedding breakfast and the speeches we had a break in the weather so we made the most of it and ventured outside into the fields to grab some lovely fun romantic shots against the dark and moody Cotswold skies.  Both Helen and David had planned ahead and come had come prepared with their Hunter wellies. In the 20 minutes we had in the fields we got some lovely shots with David sweeping Helen off her feet at one stage which was hilarious - before the rain started again and we headed back indoors.  Later on in the evening during the break before the bands second set,  we were able to go outside for a few after dark pics.  The rain had cleared a little and a few stars started to twinkle through the dark velvet blue/black sky above which made it all the more romantic.

Now,  when it comes to photography its like anything else in the sense that you get what you pay for - especially when it comes to weddings. You really have to take into account the weather and if its a dark wintery day with a full blown storm outside, how am I going to have amazing photos?  A good pro will always see the best in any situation no matter what the light is like. If its dark, they will be masters and know how to use any light be it natural or otherwise to give you the finest photographs possible.  Helen and David's day was a challenge due to the weather however they were up for a bit of clowning around outside and we were rewarded with some stunning photographs.  During the first dance the guests threw rose petal confetti which was definitely a "first" and came about purely by accident as we could not go outside for a confetti line during the day. It was such an awesome idea - one that I would love to see catch on.

Here is just a small selection of photographs from Helen and David's gorgeous Cotswold wedding here in Gloucestershire and if you would love to have your own relaxed Cotswold wedding photography, please do get in touch and I would love to send you out my brochure.
